It does not come with rope to attach to the chair and needs a cane spine. YouTube has some great videos on this. It is also paintable. However, the quality of the product is poor, with irregular weave and torn cane in a few places. The ends are sticking out in the middle of the piece, causing pieces not to be symmetrical. It is difficult to stain so make sure to choose the light/natural color if that's what you want.
