The book Embers of War by Fredrik Logevall is a 700-page comprehensive account of America's engagement in Vietnam from the end of WWII through the early 1960s. The author has done thorough research and laid out the political, economic, and social impacts of the conflict. The book describes the incompetence, ignorance, and poor decision-making of government and military officials. The book takes us back to France's fight to keep Vietnam as a colonial acquisition after WWII and how their eventual loss of the country dragged the US into a quagmire of its own. The author entertains and educates as he takes us through Ho Chi Minh's attempt to gain independence for Vietnam from the French by political and military means and the backing of the vast might and influence of the United States. It explains how the United States pushed the French Government into fighting Ho Chi Minh, which ended in disaster at Dienbienphu. US involvement in Vietnam was a result of American rather than French policy. The book highlights the failed ventures in Iraq and Afghanistan and the ill-conceived and unnecessary war in Vietnam caused by US decisions. Overall, it is a fascinating but depressing account of the conflict that should be read by all serious scholars of the war.
