Siblings Editorial Review
The Project by Courtney Summer is a novel about two sisters whose relationship is tested when one of them joins a religious cult called the Unity Project. The book deals with heavy topics such as suicide, cults, physical deformities, physical abuse, and parent death. The Unity Project is a well-crafted cult, reminiscent of real-life examples, with a charismatic leader who wants to pull his followers away from the world. The main characters are well-crafted, and their relationship is fleshed out, emphasizing how much they mean to each other. The protagonist, Lo, takes a big turn throughout the story, which is refreshing to see. The writing style is intriguing, with switches in time periods, and points of view. The novel deals with damaged people and relationships, and the ending is tied up neatly, which may not reflect real life, but it is nonetheless satisfying for readers. However, some readers found the characters unlikable and the storyline flat and unrealistic. It is a fun and twisty book that will keep readers guessing until the end.
