Drama Editorial Review
**** "The Substance" is a striking addition to the horror genre, characterized by its blend of disturbing visuals and a unique narrative that challenges traditional horror tropes. The film has received a diverse array of feedback from viewers, showcasing its polarizing nature. Many audience members laud the performances of Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley, highlighting their portrayal of complex characters immersed in a world of horror that not only shocks but also provokes thought. Those who enjoy modes of dark humor find a hidden layer of commentary on the modeling industry’s obsession with narcissism, adding depth to the often gory scenes. Viewer experiences range widely; while some find joy in the film's eccentricity and artistic cinematography, others feel alienated by its explicit content and graphic elements. The aesthetics, including impressive makeup effects and the film's striking 4K visuals, enhance the overall viewing experience, even on lower-end televisions. Nonetheless, some viewers were thrown off by the narrative's lack of clarity regarding the “Substance,” leading to feelings of confusion and disappointment. In essence, "The Substance" is a niche entry into the horror realm, largely appealing to those who appreciate originality paired with visceral thrills. While its combination of gore, nudity, and dark themes might not resonate with everyone, it certainly finds favor among fans of quirky, thought-provoking horror films. **
